Motion study is a useful tool for simulating the physical actions of a design. It can be used for determining if connections and fittings affect the behavior of the system, as well as provide a visual for how the design will function.

The designs shown here feature the concepts of motion study performed on both simple and complex machines. These designs and motion animations were made using both Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor.

Gravity:
Solidworks offers a function that simulates gravity to view the affect on the model. This feature was applied the the wave generator, Newton's cradle, and the radial piston engine.

Rotation:
Both Solidworks and Inventor animation provide a rotational motion simulator that behaves like a motor. This was applied to the scissor jack, the wave generator, and the radial engine to initiate motion of the other components.

Solid body contact:
Each of these designs requires components to make physical contact. Heat transfer simulations and material selection in FEA provide fatigue details to help determine lifespan and risk assessment.
